Dutch treat

NewFNP is in a bit of a pickle.

You see, newFNP really values cute shoes.  But her plantar fasciitis is killing her.  And delicious though her sweet J. Crew Liv flats might be, they offer her no support at clinic.  And for the love of Pete, she can't wear her Cole Haan/Nike numbers each and every day!

So newFNP has been doing some thinking.  A long-articulated goal is a life of physical activity.  Sure, she tore her ACL and has a knee chock-a-block full of arthritis.  No worries - she'll just stay out of the snowboarding jump parks and enjoy the serenity of the smooth, long runs and maybe just take a little hop here and there.  And, yes, it's true that her mid-tibial tendinitis did get so severe that her physical therapist threatened to put her in the boot.  As if.  OK - so she has sacrificed her running and would now be hard pressed to run a mile although, truth be told, she hasn't recently tired.  But she wants to, goddammit, how she wants to!  And now with the fucking plantar fasciitis.

Well, she's thinking of returning to the supportive arches of the Dansko clog. Oh sweet Jesus, she feels a pang of sartorial resignation in even thinking it.  But BostonFNP wears them and looks so smart.  Dr. Dual-Ivy-League-Degrees looks cute as a button in hers.

But newFNP will just feel like a big frump.  This is why newFNP is totally pathetic.  Who gives a fuck if she looks Dutch frumpy at work?  Only newFNP cares about that.  But she might just buy those fuckers anyway because she does not want bunions or plantar fasciitis or heel spurs or any of their associated surgical or aesthetic sequelae.

If she goes with the patent leather option, that could be cute.  Right?  Maybe even with a new pair of AG jeans, right?

Right?!?!!

Actually, Dansko is at least nominally Danish, not Dutch (a visit to dansko.com confirms that the founders are a Dane and an American who started off by importing shoes from Denmark). "Dansk" is the Danish word for "Danish," and "sko" is the Danish word for "shoe" (then again, "dans" is Danish for "dance" an "ko" is Danish for "cow," which becomes apparent when you visit dansko.dk).

Strangely enough, I hear more about them in the States than I do here in Copenhagen; three of my randomly sampled (male, computer-scientist) Danish colleagues hadn't heard of them, which makes me suspect that they'd really be more accurately described as "American."

Jeff (who can attest to newFNP's proclivity for physical activity)

Hey you'll be less dorky looking that me who runs around in LA in *gasp* white dankos since the school demands white and I've been too lazy to buy black and sigh I too have a closet full of cute j crew flats that are very sad and lonely right now

i have a pair of black matte Danskos, but i'm thinking about making a switch myself and getting some MBTs ... which bring a whole new level to the term "fashion-challenged".

but damn, they felt SO good/fun to walk in when i tried them on last weekend.

It's true that Danskos are largely the realm of yoga teachers, hippies and (nerdy-and-not-in-a-cool-way) academics. BUT nothing beats them for comfort, and many of their new styles are quite cute (esp. the mary janes). I got over my fear of the dansko nerdfactor years ago and have never looked back. 8 pairs later, my feet feel great and I have learned to tune out my friends' snarky comments about how I wear the shoes of a soccer mom. I'm just saying...

Have you checked out MBTs? They seem to come in a lot of different styles, and they walk/stand/run like a -dream-. I got them because of back pain that started during nursing school, and now that I've been wearing them for a week I'll never go back to flat-soled shoes.

Come on people! Seriously, clogs??? Do not, repeat, do not pair Dansko with your lovely theory pants! Maybe you can just keep a pair under your desk and slip into them prn ;-) Hate to burst your bubble, but there isn't anything "cute" about them!

as long as the clogs aren't crocs.....can't stand those. Anything that is dishwasher safe can't be fashion friendly.

Would Taryn Rose tickle your fancy...

Taryn Rose *would* tickle newFNP's fancy, but she simply cannot take out any more loans and TR's do not come cheap!!

If there were a celebrity death match to defend Danskos, I'd cut any bitch who swore against them ;-) I have been wearing them for years and love, love, love them. Now, don't get me wrong, I have enough pair of 3" heels and knee high boots and patent leather all kindsa get up shoes but Danskos have their place, man. I wear them to the hospital, I run errands in them on the weekend, they're remarkably rain proof and they're just so damn practical it's hard to argue against 'em.

So, obviously BostonFNP has not read up her favorite blog in awhile, becuase I missed the shout-out. Girl, I swear that sometimes I look down at my feet and wonder what happened to my life, but damn it if my feet don't feel awesome at the end of a 12 hour day. You held out like a trooper, but I think it's time to bite the bullet. You can't be crippled for life because of pride... or could you? :)
