Addendum

How could newFNP have forgotten to encourage all new NP's to ask their potential employer about the number of patients you are expected to see per day?!?

See, this is why newFNP needs lists.

A new MD in our practice told me that at her former employer, Planned Parenthood, the providers saw 50-60 patients per day. Can you imagine? NewFNP just about had a stroke when she heard that. Not all of those patients need exams, but nonetheless, that is a lot of vaginas in one day.

I know!!! Another sick vagina and I'll just keel at the end of my day. I just sent your blog to a bunch of students at UCSF and to a few work mates. I love it. Its validating. Thanks and keep up the good work and the great writing.

Point 11. Has this practice ever had an NP before? Does the support staff understand the role and how to promote you as a provider? Are other providers in the practice supportive of NPs?

Makes a huge difference - especially if you are new at this....

I just got a job at a health center as a RN; I'm in a FNP grad program. I decided I wanted to work there after graduation once I heard that they only schedule the FNPs for 8 pts in the morning and 8 in the afternoon; physicians are scheduled for 12 each. The manager said it was so they could utilize the strengths of each specialty (teaching/counseling FNP, diagnosis MD).
