I am just starting the advanced practice portion of my NP program and find your stories hilarious and heartwarming. This one in particular really jumped out at me. What a wonderful encounter, and you handled it beautifully. It sounds like you really made a difference in this kid's day, and possible in his life. You sound like a wonderful practitioner!Lesliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02430974507635860856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15944817.post-53908235642468401262008-03-20T16:09:00.000-07:002008-03-20T16:09:00.000-07:00I'm in my last clinical of my last year of NP scho...I'm in my last clinical of my last year of NP school. I LOVE that I have the extra time to really listen and be a great NURSE to my patients at my community health clinic in Cambridge, MA. I'm terrified of losing that once I get into the workforce where productivity is pushed... 15 minute visits are standard... Ugh.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15944817.post-55487643451501203272008-03-19T15:13:00.000-07:002008-03-19T15:13:00.000-07:00from a new fnp outside of santa cruz: thanks for ...from a new fnp outside of santa cruz: thanks for posting this....community health can be so DIFFICULT sometimes, and it just drains you by the end of each shift. Sometimes, like in this situation, just listening and not so much "doing" is the real answer for what the patient actually needs. You might never know just how important this visit was for the poor kid. Kudos to you....and a big pat on the back.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15944817.post-70780804089482283712008-03-18T23:15:00.000-07:002008-03-18T23:15:00.000-07:00This is why I decided to become a nurse. It really does matter for a kid to have an adult who listens to them!!! It's such a trip how often your posts sound like my experience. I'm glad to know that there was some brightness for you in this, too.Serenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05274913724638456096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15944817.post-88872907109561139722008-03-18T20:41:00.000-07:002008-03-18T20:41:00.000-07:00great job, newFNP! I'm a new FNP too. I've forwarded your blog to a number of my other FNP friends. You are a great writer and your stories are always interesting. When I read this story today I seriously almost cried. People always ask me if I want to go to medical school eventually or if I just want to "settle" for being nurse. This story exemplifies how I see nursing as being completely different from medicine and why I would choose nursing over and over again. Keep up the good work!Lenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05820301781894772745noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15944817.post-70747755773258521932008-03-18T19:35:00.000-07:002008-03-18T19:35:00.000-07:00You go, NewFNP.
